Powering ahead with new investment

Baker & Finnemore has just gained approval to move forward with the largest single piece of capital investment the company has ever seen – £660,000 on a new power press!

Bolstering its range of equipment, the new 110T Minster Press will be delivered early in 2017 and be operational by the end of April. “This new machine drastically increases the range of pressing capability by allowing the use of larger, more complicated tooling or even multiple tools at once,” stated the company. “The other major benefit of having this equipment is that it will allow Baker & Finnemore to further modernise the production processes for its existing range of Starlock push on Fasteners.

This investment is the next step in supporting the growth of Baker & Finnemore following a total of close to £750,000 of other investment put into the company since July 2012. This is when it joined the German-owned Titgemeyer Group of companies. This prior investment has been spread across all areas of the business, focusing on removing bottlenecks and gaining efficiencies from the various manufacturing processes.

Some of the areas improved include the in-house heat treatment plant, which saw modifications to comply with high Cqi-9 standards, new equipment for the in-house tool room, such as state-of-the-art wire erosion machinery, auto CNCs and grinders, and high-tech vibration and drying equipment to greatly enhance the scour, deburr and finishing process.

Also, Sage 200 Manufacturing software is now fully utilised throughout the business for accounting, sales, CRM, stocking and manufacturing system processes. Highly accurate and industry recognised inspection equipment has also been invested in, including OPG optical/laser and Keyance inspection systems to ensure the company maintains its extensive range of Quality Accreditation, including automotive TS16949 and Aerospace and Defence AS9100.

“The Minster press represents a major stepping stone for Baker & Finnemore, as it is the first time the company has ever purchased a new power press,” said the company. “It represents the intent of Baker & Finnemore and the wider Titgemeyer Groups to support all industries with highest quality Starlock Push on fasteners, bespoke pressings and application engineering know-how at competitive prices.

Managing director Paul Watkins-Burke further commented: “This investment represents a great stride forward in our capability, but also illustrates our recognition for the demands of today’s markets. These are very exciting times.”

Sales director Ian Styles added: “This equipment allows us to pair our reputation for high quality products with the capability and competitiveness the global markets demand. It will help us strengthen our core Starlock product and give a new lease of life to our bespoke pressings division.
