New breakthrough adhesive for bonding nylon

Polyamide (nylon 6 and nylon 6.6) is a popular, low cost material, widely used throughout manufacturing industries. Historically however, it has been a difficult material to bond… until now! Permabond’s new TA4660 adhesive bonds nylon so well, it achieves substrate failure in pull tests!

Nylon is a very versatile, high strength, lightweight and low cost engineering plastic and as such, is understandably a popular choice for design engineers in a wide range of applications including under bonnet automotive housings, electric vehicle battery pack sealing, electronics, sensors and sports equipment to name just a few . However, nylon is not an easy material to bond. Often, a seemingly good initial bond will fall apart after just a few days, due to slip additives migrating to the surface of the nylon causing constant surface lubricity.

Permabond receives requests on a regular basis, for a high strength, durable adhesive suitable for bonding nylon, so their team of development chemists took on the challenge and have developed a solution! Permabond TA4660 structural acrylic adhesive produces high strength bonds on filled and unfilled nylon 6 and nylon 6,6. Its toughened matrix helps to give it high peel and impact strength and absorbs any differential thermal expansion and contraction stress without causing the bond to fracture.  In pull tests, the bond is so strong that the nylon fails before the adhesive!

Permabond TA4660 is ideal for bonding nylon to nylon but can also be used for bonding nylon to various metals, forming a high strength bond on aluminium, steel and many other metallic surfaces.  This two-part adhesive is easy to dispense via a dual cartridge with a static mixing nozzle and full cure is achieved at room temperature, so there’s no need for any hand mixing, weighing or heat/oven curing.
