A manufacturer of components for satellites contacted international fastenings company Böllhoff with a problem it was encountering using threaded inserts. The company experienced galling during the insertion of the inserts it was using due to the design of the competitor’s product.

There were a number of design constraints to finding a suitable alternative, notably that the inserts must conform to standards for corrosion and heat resistance in adverse conditions. It also had to have uniform load and stress distribution be wear free and have reject recovery. Finally, there is limited access because of the design of the component.

The solution Böllhoff developed uses the company’s HELICOIL® Plus, which has a reduced diameter first coil that allows it to be screwed into the hole without the need for pre-winding. This simplifies the tooling and insertion significantly. Because of this pre-winding, tooling is not required. This solved the issue of access to parts of the component.

HELICOIL® plus thread inserts create high-strength, wear-resistant, heat-resistant threads of highest precision. They are available in free running and screwlock version. The green or red colour allows easier identification when they are installed.

HELICOIL® plus thread inserts have been developed in many different designs to and are commonly used to repair destroyed threads. The assembly of wear resistant HELICOIL® thread inserts provides increased thread loading.
