Expelling the myths of Hose clamps.

1 min read

JCS look at some of the common misconceptions surrounding hose clamps covering factors such as the strength, type and materials of different clamps available.

At JCS, we live and breathe the world of hose clamps and are always discussing the subject with customers, industry contacts and users.

On our travels we sometimes hear pieces of misinformation that are stated as if they are true but, in fact, they are incorrect.

Therefore, we thought it was time we exposed the three most common myths about hose clamps:

Myth #1: Tightening the clamp more will improve performance

Of course, to ensure a secure, firm grip you need to tighten the hose clamp but tightening will only get you so far. What really determines the performance of the hose clamp is the efficiency of the internal mechanism to convert the tightening of the screw into torque. If this mechanism is sub-standard then, as the screw is tightened, the clamp will perform less well due to internal losses.

Here at JCS our worm drive hose clamps have been continually improved over the 70 years since we started making them, the rolled threaded screw engages perfectly in the uniformly pressed banding to ensure all the torque applied is used to seal the hose.

Myth #2: Nut and bolt clamps seal tighter than hose clamps

This is another industry myth we hear from time to time but the tests we have conducted in-house show that JCS worm drive clamps consistently out-perform nut and bolt type clamps.

Our trials show that the JCS worm drive clamps tighten more uniformly and offer a consistently higher sealing pressure that their nut and bolt clamp counterparts. We would be happy to share the results of these tests with anyone who requests them.

Myth #3: Because it’s made of stainless steel it won’t rust

There are over 100 different grades and types of stainless steel, and their performance and anti-corrosive properties differ enormously.

JCS hose clamps are manufactured using 304 and 316 grade stainless steel, which contain higher levels of chromium than standard stainless steel and are renowned for their anti-corrosive properties.

That’s why our products are the clamps of choice for operators in the food processing, marine and aviation sectors, where durability and exceptional corrosion resistance is required.
