HSE plans a fee for intervention

Mark Weymouth of Leuze electronic does not want to get into politics but has pointed out to Fastening Solutions that the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has moved significantly closer to charging for its work with the introduction of a fee for intervention (FFI), which is planned to be introduced on 1st October 2012.
The cost recovery scheme is outlined in regulations making their way through Parliament and currently subject to approval of the proposed Health and Safety (Fees) Regulations 2012. This legislation will place a duty on the HSE to recover its costs for carrying out its regulatory functions when there is a material breach of health and safety law. Initially this charge will be £124 per hour for a service which is currently free of charge.
A material breach is when the HSE inspector considers a contravention of health and safety law serious enough to require notification in writing to the duty holder. Naturally manufacturers and assemblers who do not attract the attentions of the HSE will not have to pay the fees and there is more information about the scheme on the HSE's website at www.hse.gov.uk/fee-for-intervention/index.htm. And naturally Mr Weymouth is keen to highlight the information and training which can be provided free from Leuze electronic to help manage machine safety.
