Dymax launches biocompatible range for wearable devices

The 2000-MW series is the first dedicated, light-curable adhesive product line specifically formulated without materials of concern and common skin irritants to address the medical wearables market. These biocompatible adhesives, said to be first-in-class, were developed to address changing customer requirements and rapidly evolving trends in the wearable device market. They were developed without isobornyl acrylate (IBOA), a common skin irritant, and TPO, a photoinitiator which is a material of concern.

This range of adhesives passed ISO 10993-10 for sensitization and irritation, as well as ISO 10993-5 for cytotoxicity.

The portfolio of products is used for structural bonding applications, encapsulating or coating medical wearable electronic components. Although Dymax medical adhesives are not intended to be in direct contact with the skin, we have intentionally designed 2000-MW series to address concerns around skin sensitivity in the event of indirect or prolonged device contact.

Three products are included in the range. 2021-MW is a medium viscosity adhesive with excellent adhesion to difficult-to-bond substrates like PI (Kapton) and nickel-plated stainless steel and other materials such as plastics, brass, stainless steel, aluminum, glass and ceramic that require flexible bonding. This makes it an ideal substance to use for the assembly of medical smart devices, patient monitoring devices, large volume injectors, diabetes care devices or other applications. The skin-sensitive adhesive cures in seconds using UV/visible light or LED optimized for 405nm. When cured with Dymax UV light curing equipment, they deliver optimum speed and performance for device assembly.

2101-MW-UR is a light-cure adhesive that bonds using LED or ultra-violet light with a medium viscosity. The material also uses Ultra-Red fluorescing for simple in-line inspection of UV curing materials. The medical adhesive forms a bond to many plastics such as ABS, PC, PCTG, PETG, PVC, and TPU. This makes it an ideal substance to use for the assembly of medical smart devices, patient monitoring devices, large volume injectors or diabetes care devices.

2022-MW is recommended for use as a coating or encapsulant on RFID chips or sensors housing assemblies, and single- or multi-use medical devices where moisture ingression is a concern. It is said to bond well to stainless steel, aluminum, glass, and printed circuit boards. This material is solvent-free and cures in seconds upon exposure to broad-spectrum UV or 365nm LED light.
