Araldite epoxy applied to DDT

1 min read

Araldite insulation epoxies delivered anti-cracking, electrical insultation and thermal conductivity properties for a dry-type transformer (DDT) developed by Huntsman and TBEA Group.

TBEA Group chief technical head Jie Meng said: “Araldite insulation epoxy plays a key role in this project, especially in the insulation material’s post-curing and demould process, which solved the easy-to-crack problem brought on by the transformer’s large size.”

The size of the dry-type power transformer is about 9.6 meters in length, 6.3 meters in width and 5 meters in height. Its total weight is more than 160 tons. it has a capacity of 50,000 kVA and a voltage class of 115:36.5.

This success allows for more options for power transmission and distribution in high voltage areas.

Jason Song, senior sales manager for power applications in Huntsman’s advanced materials division said: “Before the successful trial of the 50000kVA/110kV dry-type power transformer, oil type transformers were typically used in high voltage areas. However, oil type transformers can be subject to environmental concerns with their flammability and potential leaks. Dry-type transformers are not prone to those same risks.”

Jordan Wu, technical service manager of power applications for Huntsman’s advanced materials division added: “The successful application of Araldite insulation epoxy in the world’s largest capacity and the highest voltage dry-type power transformer is a milestone in the electrical industry. We hope to see additional development and utilization of large capacity, high voltage dry-type transformers in the future.”
