Adhesion promoter supplier shortlisted for automotive innovation

Oxford Advanced Surfaces (OAS) has been shortlisted for the 2015 Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) Automotive Award for Innovation. OAS is one of only five companies to make the shortlist.

Philip Spinks, CEO at OAS, commented: “We are really proud to be one of only five companies shortlisted for such a prestigious award; past winners include Ford and Jaguar Land Rover, so some really big players in the automotive sector contend for this title.”

OAS’s entry focuses on its Onto adhesion promoters. These treatments improve adhesive bonding to plastic reinforced composites and aluminium, enabling the use of lightweight, more environmentally friendly materials in automotive manufacturing. Onto is OAS’s proprietary surface modification technology.

Marketing manager Dr Sarah Vickers said: “Lightweight vehicle design is a key R and D focus in the automotive industry at the moment as manufacturers aim to reduced fuel emissions in light of environmental legislation. Not only must manufacturers consider how they process these materials, but also how they join them together to construct vehicle components; our Onto adhesion promotion technology adds real value where joining is a challenge.”

Now in its sixth year, the Award – in partnership with the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC), sponsored by GKN, and supported by The Times – rewards the best UK-developed technologies with potential to influence the automotive sector in years to come.
