Motorcycle parts maker gets a bolt on

1 min read

The brief was simple- reduce the weight at the rear wheel chain sprocket of a racing motorcycle without a compromise on performance and safety.

Working with the Pro-Bolts motorcycle parts maker’s technical team to Bollhoff Armstrong's recommendation, a marriage of two components have been achieved. Lightweight nuts manufactured from 7075T6 Aerospace High Tensile Anodised Aluminium then fitted with a Helicoil® Classic Free running insert manufactured from high tensile stainless steel A2 X5 CrNi 18 10 wire formed into a rhombic profile.

Thread sizes had to be standard industry supplied so two Helicoil® inserts sizes were required M10x1.25 and M12x1.25 both manufactured with special insert lengths to be installed correctlyin the Aluminium Flange nuts to optimisefull thread engagement

To maintain that the Helicoil® Classic inserts are installed to the correct depth on each Flange nut. Bollhoff Armstrong recommended and supplied Pneumatic Installation Tooling Type P-PSG with Exchange units M10x1.25 and M12x1.25with installation depths set by compensating discs. This method of installation was also recommended by Bollhoff Armstrong due to the volume of production resulting in an 80% efficiency in production time compared with hand tool installation.
