Epoxy system makes faster yachts

Swiss boat builder Wacker-Werft wanted a faster yacht with a lighter and stiffer structure with less maintenance and the assurance of a longer life cycle.

Boats made with epoxy resins have a number of distinct advantages including superior mechanical properties, long resistance to fatigue, increased resistance to osmosis offering less maintenance and much longer life cycles. For the infusion of hull and decks of its latest design, Wacker-Werft chose the high performance Araldite Epoxy infusion system LY564 and Hardeners XB 3486/87 were chosen. And, for the assembly of all bulkheads, hull to deck joints and structures, a new thixotropic epoxy adhesive was used. The new boat was designed to have a lighter and stiffer structure making it ideal for Regatta sailing. Huntsman worked with its Swiss distributor Astorit to supply new adhesive epoxy systems and to provide technical support.
