Make Measurement Matter exhibitor helps assure wind turbine safety

Global fastener experts Cooper & Turner has provided fastener security for the renewable energy industry for over 25 years, producing bolts and fixings for wind turbine structures worldwide. Some of these are located in the most hostile of environments, including off-shore wind farms. In these environments, exposure to the elements presents additional challenges and makes unique demands on fasteners where long term, assured quality and integrity is critical to safe operation.

To help ensure that all its products meet the stringent manufacturing criteria necessary to supply into this market sector, Cooper and Turner has been using Tinius Olsen products and expertise in its production processes for many years, with a Tinius Olsen Super L proving to be one of the most accurate and reliable machines on the shop floor. Here, the machine is utilised multiple times per day, with its maximum capacity of 3000kN ensuring the precise testing of each safety critical fastener so that it meets all the required international standards.

Bolt diameters tested on the Tinius Olsen Super L range from M16 up to M80, and the fasteners are generally made of alloy steel, heat treated to meet the mechanical properties of ISO898-1 property class 8.8 and 10.9.

Most fasteners within a turbine are installed by torque, so Cooper & Turner rely on the Tinius Olsen machine to be certain that the preload and torque capabilities of individual fasteners are proven prior to sign-off for dispatch and subsequent use.

The GTMA Make Measurement Matter event takes place at the acclaimed British Motor Museum at Gaydon on March 12th. Located just 1 minute from the M40 south of Warwick and adjacent to the JLR and Aston Martin plants, pre-registered visitors benefit from easy access to the venue, abundant and free parking outside the hall, free show entry, free bacon roll and brew for those arriving before 1030, free tea and coffee on site, and free entry to the superb Museum itself (saving the standard adult entry price of £14.50).
