When the University of Portsmouth’s UP Racing team approached tesa UK with a view to the company supporting them in their 2015 Formula student project, they received an enthusiastic and positive response from one of the world’s leading tape manufacturers.

tesa’s work with the automotive market includes the OEM and Motor Sport sectors and the use of adhesive tapes as bonding, joining and fixing solutions has long been recognised as delivering benefits in more efficient production and offering lighter weight when compared to mechanical fixings.

Adam White, project manager of UP Racing, liaised with the tesa team based at the company’s Milton Keynes headquarters and settled with a powerful high quality acrylic coated cloth tape tesa 4651, which was then supplied for use in a multitude of applications.

The tape was utilised on the edging of bodywork, sheet metal and brackets to give them a neat finish with no sharp edges and to attach the wiring loom to the chassis where a cable tie would otherwise be visible. It was also used on the foam driver’s seat covering and to attach driver’s leg protection, as well as covering bodywork fasteners and cable management and for shielding in the pit lane.

In addition to providing a strong bond, this cloth tape does not leave sticky residue or markings on paint or bodywork when applied.

The 2015 racing season proved to be a great launch platform for UP Racing in its first full year of competition. The team competed in the Skid Pad, Acceleration, Autocross and Endurance events at Formula Student Spain and the car is now back in the UK where it will undergo further testing and preparation for the 2016 season.

tesa is looking to extend its relationship with UP Racing to provide a variety of products including a laser label tape to produce professional custom labels for use all over the car, professional masking tape to help improve painting quality, a wire harnessing tape to tidy wiring looms and duct tape for driver’s seat protection.

Jeremy Smith, marketing manager at tesa UK said, “We look forward to working with UP Racing during 2016 and to being a part of their success story.”
