New compressor valve steel from Sandvik

1 min read

Swedish metals producer Sandvik has launched a compressor valve steel, Freeflex.

It is a hardened and tempered martensitic stainless compressor valve steel with a unique chemical composition including copper as an alloy.

Sandvik states that the material is characterised by:

  • High strength and very good ductility
  • Excellent surface finish and a very high compressive residual surface stress.
  • Low level of non-metallic inclusions
  • Excellent wear resistance
  • Extremely high fatigue strength under bending and impact stress

Such properties make the strip steel product suitable for many types of valves in industrial applications.

It sits alongside three other products. They are: Sandvik 20C, a carbon steel with 1% carbon for high fatigue strength; Sandvik 7C27Mo2m, a martensitic stainless chromium steel alloyed with molybdenum that has higher fatigue strength than Sandvik 20C S; and Sandvik Hiflex, a high-fatigue resistance stainless chromium steel said to offer design freedom for valves in high-frequency and high-pressure compressors.
