Automated peel testing boosts productivity

Texture analysis specialist, Stable Micro Systems, has launched a measurement system which fully automates 90° adhesive peel tests. With little operator involvement, laboratories can quantify the quality and performance of their products.

Used in conjunction with the company's TA.XTplus texture analyser, the Automated Linear Indexing System (ALIS) carries out 90° peel tests by using multiple speed elements in a single test. Eliminating the need for separate tests for each protocol. This results in faster sample throughput and increased productivity, Stable Micro Systems claims. With the new system, tests and results are completed with little or no operator involvement, enabling skilled technicians to perform fewer repetitive tasks and concentrate on other activities. This not only improves the accuracy of the results, but also creates a safer and more rewarding work environment. The system is easily integrated into any TA.XTplus analyser and is available in two platform lengths – 250mm or 600mm – which can be moved at a single constant speed or multiple speeds throughout a test, making it ideal for multiple peel tests within a single length of adhesive strip. Full system control is provided by Exponent software which allows operators to define and regulate a number of vital parameters, including speed, distance and time. Based on a simple and easy-to-use interface, the software also delivers highly accurate data in a clear and concise format, which can provide guidance on potential changes to production specifications. More importantly, the results for each of the different speed stages can be easily analysed in one single graph, delivering an instant overview of the effects that speed variations have on the material. "Meeting tight deadlines is critical for a lot of our customers," commented Jo Smewing, applications manager for the company. "By automating processes like peel testing, manufacturers of adhesives will not only be able to accelerate repetitive procedures, but also gain the assurance that their products meet the quality and durability standards their customers demand. With ALIS, we are now able to offer the adhesive industry an even more cost- and time-effective way of analysing how products behave under certain pressures, saving manufacturers both time and money."
