There are over 10,000 SME manufacturing sites operating within 100 miles of Newcastle and, with inward investment from larger manufacturers such as Nissan in Sunderland and now Hitachi in County Durham, the North East's economy is stronger than ever. FAST previews the forthcoming Manufacturing & Engineering North East Event being held on July 8 and 9.

Independent market research and interviews with over 200 manufacturing and engineering decision makers from the North East confirms a demand for a new type of manufacturing and engineering event. Manufacturing & Engineering North East has been created and is supported by Findlay Media's market leading brands Works Management, Eureka, FAST, Machinery and New Electronics to meet that demand and to champion manufacturing industry in the region.

Manufacturing & Engineering North East will showcase the North East's strengths and provide a platform for the local and national manufacturers, engineers and their suppliers to meet, learn, solve problems and develop business.

The event will comprise three key elements covering the full range of design, production and manufacturing. Keynote conference sessions from market-leading engineering and manufacturing businesses will be held alongside practical, hands-on workshop sessions. The educational element of the event is backed up by an exhibition with access to market leading suppliers.

The event will therefore bring together speakers and engineering and manufacturing companies in one location for two days. Taking place at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle on July 8 and 9, the event is based around conference sessions featuring industry leaders, practical workshops and an exhibition giving people access to key companies in the region.

Ed Tranter, executive director at event organisers Findlay Media, said: "Historically manufacturing and engineering have been at the heart of the North East's economy and today there are over 10,000 manufacturing and engineering design sites operating within a 100-mile radius of Newcastle.

"It is an exciting time for the North East and we are looking forward to supporting its ongoing development," added Tranter.

The event is being supported by organisations including the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS), North East LEP, Gateshead & Newcastle Inward Investment, Advance Manufacturing Forum and the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED).

On the exhibition floor, visitors will be able to visit a variety of companies from the fastening and assembly sector. One such organisation is Henkel, which claims to provide a comprehensive source of products and advice for every bonding requirement. he Henkel range of adhesives incorporate five core technologies – epoxies, acrylics, polyurethanes, silane modified polymers and silicones. It also provides dispensing equipment from hand-held devices to fully automated systems, to make product application precise, economical and clean.

Continuous development of both its adhesive technologies and methods of application have resulted in several new additions. The highly flexible instant adhesive, Loctite 4902 offers elongation of up to 155% and provides a high-strength bond in seconds. t can be reliably used on plastics, rubber, metals and other substrates and is ISO 10993 biocompatible making it suitable for bonding disposable medical devices.Another recent development is Loctite 4090 - an epoxy cyanoacrylate hybrid, this product combines the handling speed of a cyanoacrylate adhesive with the toughness and durability of an epoxy adhesive.

The award-winning Technomelt range of low pressure moulding, hotmelt adhesives has also been expanded.New advanced formulations are now available that are UV-stabilised, ultra-clear and chemical resistant. They address the most demanding encapsulation requirements including all types of sensors, automotive products, new lighting designs and medical devices.

Visitors to the show will also see the latest dispensing equipment development too.Henkel's patented Jet Valve system enables bubble-free dispensing at up to 300 drops per second; droplets can be as small as 0.3mm depending on the adhesive used. This new diaphragm technology is easy to integrate thanks to its compact design and requires little maintenance.

Metalworking

Trumpf specialises in metalworking production technology that gives UK manufacturers the lead in the global market. At MENE, the company will focus on the wide scope of its products and services that support manufacturers through the life cycle of the machine investment and beyond.

From systems for laser cutting, punching and bending to advanced laser processing technology, Trumpf is committed to developing production solutions for manufacturers of all sizes. The company's systems give manufacturers the flexibility to increase the efficiency of their high-quality part production – in small batches or high volumes. They are designed to provide business agility, supreme reliability, competitive edge and a rapid return-on-investment.

All machines are designed to accept flexible and expandable automation. The choice ranges from simple productivity gains from features such as automatic laser nozzle exchange through to all the elements necessary for full, lights-out production.

At the opposite end of the scale Trumpf manufactures and continues to invest in the development of portable fabrication equipment.Details of the full range and also the tooling service provided will be on the stand.

Under the umbrella of TruServices, the company provides a comprehensive range of consultancy and technical services to support its customers and these too will be highlighted at the show. The options start with finance – it operates its own bank – and includes software support both at machine and business level. A wide range of maintenance and service packages are also available as is application and product specific training.

Springs

The Springmasters Group incorporates Valley Springs and Belleville Springs and is considered to be one of the leading and most diverse manufacturers of springs in the UK. As a result of multi million pound investment, the group offers a comprehensive range of compression, extension, torsion and flat metal springs

The Group's 50,000 square foot manufacturing facility, encompassing two sites, offers customers CNC coiling from a wire diameter of 0.1mm to 20mm in addition to lathe coiling up to a diameter of 50mm.

The company will be exhibiting a range of small and heavy duty springs for all applications along with various spring related fasteners.

Lee Spring will be showcasing its range of around 22,000 springs at MENE. The company's products are used in the manufacturing and engineering of parts or products in various industry sectors, such as the automotive, aerospace, valve and turbine manufacturing and general engineering sectors.

"All our products are made from high quality materials to suit a range of industry sectors and applications that are heavily reliant on high quality components including springs and fasteners to keep machinery operating smoothly," said managing director Chris Petts.

The company manufactures a huge range of stock designs, suitable for varied uses but many companies which require heavy duty, waterproof, non-corrosive or heat and pressure resistant parts will opt for a custom design which has everything they need. Lee Spring experts will be on the stand ready to discuss the company's custom spring design service, which offers bespoke spring designs for specific application demands.

Assembly

Ejot will debut its lightweight alloy to high strength steel assembly process at the Newcastle event. The company chose the Manufacturing and Engineering North East Exhibition to unveil its Ejoweld assembly process, for the first time in the UK.

Five years in development with a major German automotive manufacturer, the Ejoweld process creates a high strength fix between lightweight materials to high strength materials – typically light alloys to boron steel. This highly sophisticated friction weld system employs specially developed components in the form of either a rivet or a pin, to secure structure of vehicle.

The development programme has been driven by the need to reduce emissions by creating lighter vehicles. High strength, light-weight materials proved the obvious solution, yet these cannot be secured effectively by means of a traditional self-pierce rivet.

Ejot's stand will feature a customised demonstration rig to give the process its first official UK viewing. On the full assembly unit a self-feed system enables a robotic assembly station. No sparks or flash are generated and the process creates very little noise whilst localizing heat generation.
