High-security threaded lock system

Specialty Fasteners & Components is promoting the McGard range of high-security locking wheel nuts.

In the United Kingdom the company is the exclusive distributor for these products - which are made in the United States - reports Peter Boote, SFC. "Now, McGard, which has supplied to automotive manufacturers, is advancing its expertise by adapting its tamper-proof high-security drive system to suit additional applications in which joints need to be extremely secure yet allow full access to service engineers in sectors such as telecommunications, computing, water and electricity meters, valves, pipes, etc." The system secures access covers against unauthorised entry. Service engineers are able to remove the locks with unique keys. The head of every lock - in nut or bolt form - is hardened in order to prevent manipulation by drills, saws, files, etc. On exposed heads bevelled edges resist loosening by pliers. The 'key' to the McGard system is its unique coded groove drive form that enables an almost endless number of drive codes, says Peter Boote. "The encoding grooves are spaced closely together and this, combined with the high seating torque achievable with the system, prevents the lock being opened with conventional tools. Customised encoded grooves can be supplied to a series of locks in an area, region, or nationwide thus enabling the system provider to control access as required. The McGard security system is available in thread sizes from M3.
