Assembly improvement hinges on super fast fixings

2 mins read

When a leading manufacturer of doors wanted to improve its assembly process it turned to Böllhoff UK to provide an improved and reliable method of fixing hinges to the doors, as Andy Witts explains.

The door manufacturer makes an exceptionally high quality product, used throughout the UK building industry. Where a particular project requires a top of the range door, the GRP Fibrecolour door fits the bill. Custom built to developers' requirements for both new build and refurbishment, high performance GRP Fibrecolour doors outperform traditional solid timber and PVCu counterparts. The durable construction of the glass reinforced polymer slab makes it tough enough to resist dents and to minimise the effect of scratches, whilst remaining completely resistant to all weather conditions.

The doors are supplied as complete systems consisting of doors pre-hung in frames fitted with weather sealing components to ensure maximum effectiveness with minimum site labour. The result of which is that there are a number of fixings to be made, principally to the hinges.

Böllhoff indentified an opportunity with the customer to swap its existing manual feed pneumatic screwdrivers for a Böllhoff Uniquick® screwdriver system. The specific application studied involved screwing door hinges onto the side of a timber door frame using a traditional wood screw.

Previously the operator would place the hinge in the slot of the door. They would then have to insert three screws into the hinge using a manual pneumatic screwdriver.

This operation was cumbersome and time consuming because the operator needed to balance the screw in the hole while holding the hinge in place and then operate the screwdriver. This process was repeated six times in total for each door.

Having assessed the application, Böllhoff recommended its Uniquick® system. The Uniquick® system offers several advantages over the previous system used by the door manufacturer.

UNIQUICK® was developed for heavy duty industrial use. It was especially designed for automatic fastening of wood and self-drilling or thread-rolling screws which require pressing force of the screw fastener itself. Because the unit employs intelligent monitoring of tube and nozzle, two screws cannot be in the nozzle at the same time. Thus, availability is maximised.

Uniquick® incorporates a vibrating bowl feeder with blow feed tube system. This means the screw is blown directly to the mandrel of the Uniquick gun, so the operator has only to worry about holding the hinge in place. Also there are now no issues with alignment or operators dropping screws so production is faster with fewer errors

The process of inserting the screw is faster. This is due to the fact that after each screwing operation the system blow feeds another screw into place rather than the operator having to fetch more screws after each hinge.

The door maker’s production engineering management team is so impressed with the system it is now looking to introduce Uniquick® systems across each manufacturing line that involves a screwing operation.

Bollhoff already enjoys a strong reputation in the windows and doors sector and this latest application only serves to strengthen the company’s position in the field.
