Overcoming the minimum order headache

Steve Smith, sales director of Northern Precision, is promoting his company's services by highlighting the fact that it does not impose a minimum order policy on customers.

He cites the example of Ripley Engineering, based in Basingstoke, Hampshire, where buyer Sarah Riglar has made the decision to purchase all standard products, including self-clinch nuts, rivets, rivet bushes, and blind stand-offs, from Northern Precision. Ripley is a specialist sheet metalworking concern that primarily serves the catering and medical sectors, along with general engineering. "A rapid response prototyping service is an essential element of the company's success", says Sarah Riglar. "We have a frequent need for only a handful of fasteners of a particular specification which is why I use a supplier that is able to provide a few components on next-day delivery." Northern Precision's deliveries helps Ripley to provide its customers with everything from design through manufacture, electromechanical assembly, and finishing/surface coating, including powder coating. A portfolio of production equipment enables 3mm-thick steel sheets to be processed used CNC laser profiling, CNC punch presses, and robotic cell bending. "There are always occasions when customers need parts very quickly which means that not only do we have to react quickly but so do our suppliers", explains Sarah Riglar.
