Instant adhesive offers improved flexibility

Cyanoacrylates, better known as instant adhesives, have become highly popular in manufacturing and assembly thanks to their rapid speed of cure, ease of use and bond strength. However the joint they create is sometimes too inflexible for certain applications.

Where bond lines need to withstand movement or expansion and sealing capability is required, a product from Henkel offers a good solution. Loctite 4902 is a highly flexible adhesive, which offers elongation of up to 155% and yet still provides a high-strength bond in seconds. This product combines the traditional benefits of an instant adhesive with flexibility, resistance to leaks and excellent sealing capability and particularly suits the medical device sector.

The elongation of a traditional instant is typically less than 2% so this addition is truly in a class of its own and rivals the flexibility commonly provided by acrylic and urethane adhesives.

4902 is a clear and colourless adhesive that carries the ISO 10993 biocompatibility standard making it suitable for the assembly of medical devices. It facilitates the use of dissimilar – plastics, rubbers and metals – and opaque substrates while enhancing the overall performance of the device.

Typically, this low viscosity, single-part adhesive will be used to bond close-fitting, flexible parts; the use of a primer can also enhance the bond strength of difficult-to-bond substrates such as polyethylene or polypropylene. An activator can also be applied to the surface where larger bond gaps need to be bridged.
