Iconic fountain re-opens in Basel

In order to produce an identical version of its predecessor, the sculptors decided to use similar techniques and Araldite materials to those used for the original cast, over 36 years ago. After consulting with Huntsman, an Araldite laminating resin system and gelcoat was selected. These materials assisted in producing a robust and lightweight composite design with a high quality finish, providing the added benefit of cost savings in production and the required level of temperature resistance in application. Paul Walder, who worked alongside Jean Tinguely to help construct the fountain in 1977, said: "Out of respect to Jean Tinguely and in keeping with the fountain's iconic excellence, it was essential for us to re-produce an exact replica. I'm pleased to say that with Huntsman Advanced Materials' support and as a result of the in-depth analysis undertaken in defining materials usage and processing, we have achieved our goal in creating a robust cast which assimilates perfectly with its surroundings, maintaining the fountain's heritage for the benefit of future generations." The GRP Theaterkopf sculpture is accompanied by ten other mechanically powered moving creations in the fountain. The old sculpture is due to be placed in the Jean Tinguely Museum.
