High temperature bonding to the fore at FAST Live exhibition

Two recent applications involving the joining of components inside electric motors have highlighted recent advances in bonding technology.

In one of these, Lohmann Technologies’ DuploCOLL HCR was used to bond cooling elements onto the casing of an AC motor and, in the other, a different type of Lohmann structural bonding tape, DuploTEC, was specified to bond a magnet onto the end of a stainless steel shaft.

In both cases, the bonded items were installed into hostile high-heat environments and, prior to production commencing, the completed assemblies were required to pass a series of stringent proving tests instigated by the motor manufacturers. Both types of tape proved ideal for the chosen applications and passed with flying colours.

The full range of each of these tapes will be available for discussion with Lohmann’s structural bonding experts on its stand at the forthcoming FAST Live Exhibition, which will be held on 20 September at the IWM Duxford, adjacent to the M11 in Cambridgeshire.

Lohmann is also showcasing other recent developments that may be discussed on its stand. One is likely to be of especial interest to electronics design teams. For example, DuploCOLL HCR tapes have recently been specified for volume production by the manufacturer of an automotive emissions sensor. In this case, the tape was used for bonding a PCB directly onto the aluminium body of the sensor, an application that benefited from the ability of DuploCOLL HCR tape to operate continuously at 200º Celsius, with peaks of up 270º Celsius.

Another highlight on the Lohmann stand at the FAST Live Exhibition is something being exhibited for the first time in the UK: DuPont’s latest Temprion thermal management materials. Stated to be class-leading in the field of thermal conductivity and heat management, and available in a wide variety of formats, this new material is claimed to open up fresh horizons in engineering design, especially in the electronics sector. It is only available in the UK via Lohmann, which is DuPont’s exclusive UK partner for the product.

Visitors can discuss Temprion and its advantages with Lohmann’s thermal management expert Colin Theaker, who will be present on the stand for the duration of FAST Live.
