Federation gets behind BIS manufacturing campaign

The manufacturers' organisation EEF has given strong backing to the See Inside Manufacturing campaign launched last week by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

The campaign is part of the government's efforts to promote a modern, high technology, high value and highly skilled face of manufacturing to schoolchildren, parents and careers advisers. It is being headed initially by the automotive sector and is intended to be expanded next spring throughout other manufacturing sectors. EEF believes an out-dated image of modern manufacturing still exists amongst the public, young people and many in the education system. Changing this is vital to ensure that young people in particular are given proper guidance about the challenging and rewarding careers available in manufacturing. As part of its own efforts to change the perception of the sector EEF launched the first national manufacturing photography awards this year with awards presented to photographs taken by professionals, amateurs and young people aged 14-19. This year's competition is currently open with entries closing on 31 July. EEF chief executive Terry Scuoler commented: "For too long there has been a stereotypical image of our sector which is way out of line with reality. Modern manufacturing is a vibrant arena in which to operate with technology, processes and people. This campaign is the chance for manufacturing companies and their workforce to help do something about this image and change way people perceive our sector."
