Captivated screw spins freely for quick attachment

1 min read

A series of spinning clinch bolts for use in thin metal sheets is now available from PEM Europe. The company has introduced a one-piece captive screw solution where controlled clinching action during installation permanently captivates the screw while allowing it to spin freely in the sheet. This allows for rapid attachment of mating hardware and a reduced requirement for loose fasteners, such as screws and retaining clips or washers.

Such fasteners serve as cost-effective alternatives to multi-component fastener assemblies and the product line includes: the Type SCB fasteners with an unthreaded neck for axial float; the Type SCBJ hardware with its integrated jacking feature; and the Type SCBR versions with a self-retracting feature that enables the captive screw to remain retracted when engaged. The three types permanently install into aluminium or steel sheets as thin as 1.02mm and can be specified for close centreline-to-edge applications. Installation is quick and easy; simply press the fastener into a properly sized mounting hole and then applying squeezing force on the top of the screw head and the underside of the sheet material. The squeezing action forces the screw's displacer into the sheet, causing it to reduce the mounting-hole diameter and ultimately captivate the screw. Spinning clinch bolts are available from PEM in various lengths and thread sizes and detailed specifications, Cad models, and performance data for these RoHS-compliant fasteners can be found on the website.
