Zinc coating can watch its weight
French coating specialist, Dacral has developed a new coating material, which is aimed at protecting large parts made from steel with low thicknesses against corrosion.
The company tells us that compared to traditionally organic coatings, the new material, Geomet 900, gives increased and sacrificial protection all over complex parts. And there is only a small weight penalty when parts are coated, a major concern of the car manufacturers.
The coating has good resistance to mechanical damage and its chemical rheology enables complex parts to be processes without flow marks. The product is made from zinc flake in an aqueous phase and the coating process induces no hydrogen embrittlement. Dacral claims that Geomet 900 is suitable for a wider range of zinc-flake protection applications from fasteners to chassis and bodywork parts.
Validations at car manufacturers are in progress for parts such as engine cradles, sub frames, fuel filler pipes as well as other parts that are particularly subjected to mechanical damage.
