Composites specified for light weight roadster

FR-1 concept car, which was constructed in Melbourne to showcase the talents of Australia's manufacturing industry, relies on epoxy pregreg for light weight and high mechanical performance of its 80 kg monocoque carbon fibre composite cockpit chassis.

The GMS EP270 material specified was supplied by GMS Composites which offers a range of over 10 prepregs that includes two tooling options: BP-190, a high temperature BMI resin tooling prepreg and EP-250 a high Tg, low temperature cure epoxy tooling prepreg. And for particularly demanding applications, the range has prepreg systems with enhanced performance attributes, such as: EP-290, a carbon nano toughened epoxy resin matrix prepreg; EP-530, a UL94 V-0 rated fire retardant epoxy prepreg resin; and EP-620, a ballistic level high impact resistant epoxy prepreg resin. All these prepreg resins can be combined with a wide range of composite reinforcement fabrics made from carbon fibres, aramid, S-glass or polyethylene fibres to mould components designed for a variety of demanding applications in: aerospace, defence, rail, automotive and motorsport applications. GMS Composites has particular expertise in developing and supplying bespoke composite prepreg solutions. Using in-house technical knowledge alongside established external R and D partners, they work closely with customers to formulate and develop custom prepreg systems engineered to meet specific needs and performance requirements. This bespoke composite prepreg service has proved of particular benefit to aerospace, defence and motorsport customers needing prototypes and short run development specialty prepegs systems; the service has accelerated a number of new product development programmes, helping OEMs to bring new products to market more quickly. Technical datasheets and further information about the complete range of standard products available, as well as the bespoke 'custom prepreg' design and development service from GMS Composites will be available on the Carbon Nexus stand (J20); Carbon Nexus is Australia's leading centre for Carbon Fibre and Composites Applied Research.
